Dunnottar Castle, 1 mile south of Stonehaven is a ruin standing on a crag high above the North Sea. The Crown Jewels of Scotland were hidden here during the Civil War in England and it was used as the setting for Franco Zeffirelli’s film ‘Hamlet’ starring Mel Gibson and Glenn Close.
